WORLD WAR TWO
Wilfred George Carter
George enlisted into the Army on the 24th of December 1941 and was to be employed as a carpenter. Although there is little detail between his enlistment and July 1942 it would be likely that he did much of his training during that time as his twin sons Jefferey Allan and John Frederick were born on the 21st of September 1942 and he did not get to see them until they were 10 months old. Shortly after their birth Myrtle moved to Tarlee North of Adelaide to live with the family while George was away and with the help of Grandpa Barnes they managed during those trying times. Uncle Horace also moved into the house in 1943-44 to live while George was away. George enjoyed a drink or two and was in trouble a number of times in 1942/43 with two or three charges to his name for AWOL. He travelling between Adelaide and Darwin during that time and it appeared he enjoyed himself. He was transferred to the A.I.F on the 3rd of December 1943 while in N.S.W and allotted the service number SX 31984 and became a member of the 10th Army Unit of Engineers.

On the 13th of March 1944 he was transferred to Brisbane where he boarded HMAS Duntroon for Lae on the 5th of June 1945 and travelled to New Guinea on the 13th of June1945. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 1st of October 1945. During his time in PNG/Lae he was hospitalized a couple of times, on one occasion he was bitten by a huge centipede and said "it was like I was on fire".

On the 23rd of December 1945 he departed Lae (PNG) as the war was now over. He travelled on the HMAS Lidvard arriving in Brisbane on the 29th of December. From there he travelled to South Australia via New South Wales, arriving in Adelaide on the 3rd of January 1946 and was officially discharged on the 18th of January 1946.
