Although there has been quite a bit of combined research between Jeff Carter, Sue Manony and Mark Carter, most of it had been done individually with correspondence between them at regular intervals and sharing of information.

The only major event that has been conducted was in January 2001 when the three above travelled York Peninsular to research and look for where Stephen Carter and his family lived and worked when he first arrived in South Australia. This trip had been discussed during 2000 and in November that year they decided that it could be done. Jeff and Sue had been to York Peninsular a number of times, so they had information to help direct our efforts. Mark however, had never been down York Peninsular even through he had lived nearby almost 19 years in his early life.

Jeff and Mark Carter met up with Sue Mahony at her home in Elizabeth on Tuesday, 2nd of January 2001 to commence the Family History tour to York Peninsular. It was a rather hot day and after departing Elizabeth we travelled to Pt Wakefield into strong North winds, which was not comfortable at all. The trip from Pt Wakefield to Artherton was considerably better, although still hot. We had a minor mishap when Steve's car would not start, it was just too hot for his comby van, after the RAA arrived it wasn't long before we were back on our way. While we waited at Artherton we had a look around at the cemetary and church, but could find no evidence of our family ever being there. We travelled on to Maitland and stopped at Minlaton and Warooka.

It was too late to do any research, but we had a look at the school at Warooka, where Stephen and his daughter taught. From there we headed out to Corny Point. We stayed at the caravan park and went out to the light house for a look during the evening.

Wednesday, 3rd January
Steve, Sue, Jeff and Mark headed off in Steve's comby van to commence our research. We stopped at Warooka and had another look at the school before getting directions to the museum where we spent quite awhile having a look through and came across some interesting photos and the local history book.

We travelled on to Yorketown and Sue got in touch with Leon Davey who is the local historian. After a wonderful lunch at the local hotel we met up with Leon and spent awhile talking to him before all getting into the comby van. Leon gave us a guided tour of Honiton, which is the sight of an old town long since gone, but one that Stepehen lived and taught.

We travelled into Edithburgh and had a look at the old churches there and then to the old school that Stephen taught at in the late 1800's. The school is now being used as a second hand shop.

We travelled onto Coobowie to an old church site where Stephen's 130 acre block was back in 1871. We spoke to a family there to find out if the homestead located on the block was the original that Stephen built, but didn't manage to find out.

We dropped Leon back at Yorketown and headed back to Corny Point via Warooka as it was late.

Thursday, 4th January
We all packed up camp and went up to the sight of the old school where Stephen taught. We met up with a fellow by the name of Glen Barday who's father was a pupil at the original school and took a few photos of the sight then went up to the old settlement of Corny Point.

We had a look at the memorial and through the remains of the store, post office, blacksmith building, horse stalls and sheds. The town is not that far from the light house.

We had spent longer than we intended and had to depart as we were running late for our next appointment. We travelled on through Warooka then on to Curramulka via Minlaton.

We had a look at the old house that Clara Campion lived after her husband died and the war memorial that was unveiled by her, with her childrens names engraved from WWI. Although the old house had been painted you could see the resemblance from an old photo.

We travelled out past the cemetary to a property owned by the Stone family and met up with Muffy who is the local historian and were invited in for a chat. It was a hot day, so the cool house was a blessing. Muffy showed us quite a few photos and gave some general history about the area.

We finished our grand tour at the cemetary where we took some photos of our ancestors and also of each other to remember the occasion by then we each departed our own way as Steve and Sue headed back to Adelaide and Jeff and Mark with family headed for Whyalla.

Overall the trip was well worth it, we gained some interesting insight into our family history and photos to go with it.
